[pteranodon] Pteranodon, a pterosaur, Late Cretaceous Period, flourished between 150 million and 70 million years ago (cast from an original skeleton).

Pterosaurs included the first, and largest, flying animals with backbones. While some were as small as canaries, others dwarfed this specimen. They existed for about 135 million years. Flight was essential to pterosaurs' biological success.

An elongated fourth finger supported their wings. The structures of their jaws and teeth p permitted them to catch fish efficiently. Their presence in marine deposits, along with the fossilized contents of their stomachs, confirm that most large pterosaurs of this period ate fish.
