[book] In 1844 Lieutenant Charles Wilkes, commander of the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838 - 42, published a five - volume account of the voyage. He spent the next 17 years supervising the publication of 15 volumes and 9 atlases devoted to the specimens and information his crew had collected. This is the first volume from an 1849 edition of Wilkes' Narrative.
