During her solo transatlantic flight on May 20-21, 1932, Amelia Earhart carried fifty pre-numbered covers, of which this is number fifteen. She had them postmarked at Londonderry on May 23 to prove her arrival.

Although New York City had planned a huge reception to welcome Earhart home, she requested that the ceremonies be cancelled since the country was in the midst of the Great Depression. Earhart's homecoming still drew thousands of admirers, who showered her with ticker tape.
