[check] Charles A. Lindbergh won this check for completing the first non-stop transatlantic flight on May 20-21, 1927. Raymond Orteig had offered a $25,000 prize to encourage a flight between New York and Paris.

Lindbergh's solo flight aboard the Spirit of St. Louis, enhanced by his modest but heroic persona, took on a mythic quality in the public imagination, symbolizing the human ability to overcome seemingly unconquerable physical barriers.
