[engine] By 1905 the Wright brothers had transformed their original underpowered and unstable flying machine into a practical airplane. Orville Wright designed this 35-horsepower, 4-cylinder vertical aircraft engine in 1906. The Wrights formed a company and produced greater numbers of this engine model than any other they designed. Its production continued until about 1912.

This engine was Orville Wright's keepsake. He eventually gave it to Jim Jacobs, the mechanic with the original Wright Brothers Company.
