[Moon Rock] In 1971 James Irwin collected a lunar sample near the landing site of the Apollo 15 lunar module. A piece of mare basalt, it weighs 109g (4 oz.). It is a fragment of a rock weighing 2,672g (6 lbs.).

Approximately 3.3 billion years old, this rock is older than 98% of the earth rocks we have dated. NASA scientists--part of a worldwide research program on the Apollo lunar samples--are currently studying the remainder of this rock.
