![[Lunar Rover]](d619a.jpg) |
This lunar roving vehicle (LRV) is almost identical to the rovers astronauts used during the Apollo 15, 16, and 17 missions. They trained with this vehicle before carrying out their flights.
The electrically-powered LRV's permitted astronauts to explore larger areas than they could have on foot. The rovers were considered to be expendable and were left behind on the moon. Of much greater value--and a better use of limited space--were the soil samples and rocks collected with their help.
