The United States Postal Service issues stamp series to commemorate different aspects of
American heritage. For each, it issues a special set of "First Day Covers" on the date the series
goes on sale to the public.
The 1992 Mineral Heritage Stamp series paid tribute to our country's mineral wealth. The postal service based the stamps on mineral specimens preserved in the Smithsonian. These specimens reveal the influence of geologic events on exploration, immigration, and settlement in 19th-century America. News of huge mineral finds brought immigrants streaming into the country. The discovery of gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper hastened the settlement of many western states. |
