One of America's foremost Impressionists, Childe Hassam found inspiration on the Isles of Shoals off the New Hampshire coast. Many of his paintings depicted the Isles or were created there. He painted this work during his last summer at the location.
The South Ledges, Appledore recalls Monet's Belle Isle paintings. Impressionist painting techniques and emphasis on pure colors provided Hassam with an effective means for representing this rocky shoreline and vibrant, foaming, sunlit ocean.
