Rachel Namingha Nampeyo made this bowl. Her grandmother Nampeyo, the Hopi-Tewa potter from Hano on First Mesa, Arizona, revived the nearly lost art of pottery-making early in the 20th century. Nampeyo taught her skills to her daughters, who then instructed Rachel Nampeyo.
Rachel Nampeyo preserved traditional designs and re-created many of her grandmother's patterns. But her mastery of form and painted lines renders her works unique. Courtesy of the National Museum of the American Indian |
