Ralph Bacerra transformed this teapot--an age-old ceramic format--into sculpture. The handle appears to be made from twigs, and the pot seems to rest on a rough-textured rock. To achieve even greater visual complexity, he placed various geometric decorations under and over the glaze. Contrasting colors, textures, and shapes are essential elements in Bacerra's work. Humor is also apparent in this teapot, for it appears on the verge of tipping over. Courtesy of the Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art. |
