[Photograph] Yasuo Kuniyoshi immigrated to the United States when he was 17 and eventually enrolled in art classes in Los Angeles. He became a successful artist, realizing his ambition "to combine the rich traditions of the East with [his] accumulative experiences and viewpoint of the West."

Max Yavno was committed to using documentary photography to effect social change. He rarely made portraits of people, but this photograph was a fortunate exception in his career.
