[SI Homepage] Transforming the Ordinary

Design is a marriage of form and function that inspires us to look at everyday objects from fresh points of view. The geometric lines of a chair, the rich colors of a quilt, the intricacy of jewelry and wearable art--design elements like these awaken us to the beauty inherent in practical things.

Have a Seat
The chairs in this grouping combine practical purpose and aesthetic vision.

The Ngombe chair may not look comfortable, but its maker designed it to indicate social status. Frank Lloyd Wright's chair combines elements of Japanese aesthetics with his emphasis on integrated furniture and architectural design. Frank Gehry's lounge chair amuses and startles us by combining conventional form with unconventional material. Mecene Jacques drew on legends from his Caribbean heritage to create this chair in the form of a mermaid, transforming furniture into sculpture.
