| The Smithsonian's collections preserve ancient artifacts from all over
the world. They help us learn about the ancient peoples from whom we are
descended and reveal the ingenuity and creativity of the earliest human
communities.
By studying these relics, we can learn about ancient peoples' ways of life--
the aesthetic values expressed through their art, their use of ritual to
strengthen community ties, their development of technologies, their religious
beliefs and practices, and their communal activities. These ancient treasures
reveal to us the deep historical roots underlying our own communities.
