[pastarting] In 1956 Fortune commissioned 7 artists to look at "the stridently packaged goods of 1956" and paint what they saw. Int'l Surface No. 1 was one of several paintings to come out of Stuart Davis's exercise in attaining a new perspective on everyday reality.

The rhythms of this painting, the clarity of its form, its billboard scale, and its solid areas of color are influenced by American popular culture, especially jazz.
