By 1914 -- playing a mustachioed, duck-footed tramp - Charlie Chaplin was quickly becoming America's favorite comedian on the silver screen. By
the 1920s Chaplin had begun directing and writing his own films. Among the most noted was his biting portrayal of Adolf Hitler in The Great
Dictator.
Chaplin agreed to sit for this bust in 1924. Of Chaplin's face, the sculptor Jo Davidson wrote, it "was constantly changing. He would look gay or sad, wise or silly at will." Courtesy of the National Portrait Gallery |
