The inhabitants of the Ulda Valley in Honduras
made exquisitely carved marble vessels. Most are cylindrical, like this
example. This vessel has symmetrical panes decorated with the faces of two
deities, serpent heads, and columns of scrolls. The figures of two birds form
the bowl's handles. The positions of the handles and the deities suggest the
four cardinal points.
The fine symmetry of this bowl's design characterizes all known examples of
