[Battle Sword] George Washington (1732-1799), wore this hanger-type battle sword while commanding the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War (1775-1783). The weapon has a slightly curved, grooved steel blade. Silver strips decorate the green ivory grip.

Samuel T. Washington, an army captain and one of Washington's nephews, inherited the sword. Washington had charged him to use it only in "self- defense or in the defense of [the] country and its rights."
