[Sculpture] Theodore Roosevelt became president on September 14, 1901, after William McKinley was assassinated. As a leader of the Progressive movement, he worked to curb the excesses of big business and conserve America's natural resources. Simultaneously, he implemented his policy to "speak softly and carry a big stick" in Central and South America, a policy that climaxed with the building of the Panama Canal.

Organizers of New York City's Jacob Riis Settlement House commissioned this bronze relief in 1905 as an inspiration to immigrants.
