General Lee sat in this chair when he signed the terms of surrender. General E. W. Whitaker acquired it, and it remained in his possession until
November 3, 1871.
General Grant sat at this table to sign the document setting forth the surrender terms. After the signing, Lieutenant General Philip H. Sheridan gave the table to Elizabeth B. Custer, the wife of Major General George A. Custer. General Grant sat in this chair when he and General Lee signed the surrender terms. Afterwards some Union officers and soldiers wanted souvenirs commemorating the occasion. They took the chairs and table despite the owner's protests. General Henry Capehart acquired this chair. |
