Under contract to the U.S. postal service, Charlie Biederman used this dog sled to deliver mail over the 340-mile route between Eagle and Circle, Alaska until 1938.
Dog sleds once were commonly used to carry mail in Alaska. Alaskans valued mail so highly that they treated mail carriers like royalty. At roadhouses a driver would be given the nicest bunk, and his lead dog was allowed to sleep under his bed. Courtesy of the National Postal Museum. |
