From 1810 to 1893, the islands of Hawaii were a united kingdom. Kamehameha III was one of the most effective and revered kings to occupy the throne. He came to power in 1825 and ruled nearly 30 years.
Under Kamehameha III, Hawaii experienced considerable economic growth. and the expansion of public education. The kingdom adopted its first penal code and implemented a constitution patterned largely after those of U.S. state governments.
