[Photograph] Martin Luther King, Jr. gave eloquent voice to the demands for racial justice during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. His "I Have a Dream" speech--delivered at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963--has become a classic of American oratory.

King was one of the foremost strategists in the protests leading to landmark civil rights legislation during the 1960s. He was assassinated in 1968. By then, at least part of his dream of equality had been realized.

Benedict J. Fernandez took this photograph on April 15, 1967, during a protest against the Vietnam War in New York where King was one of the major speakers.
