This portrait of a youthful James Smithson was painted in 1786, the year he graduated from
Pembroke College, Oxford. The illegitimate son of Sir Hugh Smithson, 1st Duke of Northumberland,
James never saw his father. Also shown, weapons from the collections of Alnwick Castle,
the ancestral home to which Smithson never gained entrance.
