Mount Vesuvius

[Mount Vesuvius]

An avid mineralogist, James Smithson traveled widely throughout Europe in the 1790's, spending perhaps the most time in Italy. Lava samples from Mount Vesuvius, whose cataclysmic eruption in A.D. 79 was re-envisioned by the artist Jean-Baptiste Gèmillion (1750-1829), would have been of considerable interest to Smithson.
