Propeller of Steamer Indiana

[Propeller]

In 1979, the Smithsonian recovered the 10-foot-in-diameter propeller of the 1848 steamer Indiana, the oldest of its type known, from the bottom of Lake Superior. A yellow line maks the place where, in 1858, the blade broke off, causing the ship to sink. The Indiana itself was called a propeller in those days to distinguish it from the more common paddle-wheelers.
