America in Space

In 1961, one months after the successful launch of Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, Alan Shepard became the first American to rocket into space. Today, Shepard's Freedom 7 spacecraft is on display in the National Air and Space Museum's Milestones of Flight hall.
