The Castle Architecture

[Castle Drawing] [Hall in Castle]

In his book, Hints on Public Architecture, Smithsonian Regent Tobert Dale Owen advocated a medieval architectural design for the Castle because of this style's association with collegiate institutions and its expression of the American character--which he defined as vigor, independence, and practical economy. The Hall at right of the drawing shows an ornate mirror and a chair, designed by Castle architect James Renwick, Jr., both of which survived the fire of 1865.
