First World's Fair

[First World's Fair]

In 1851, five years after the founding of the Smithsonian, England hosted the first World's Fair. In London's Crystal Palace, the fair exhibited American machinery of the Industrial Revolution. The palace was built during the reign of Queen Victoria, whose image appears on this coin from the Smithsonian's collections.
