George Washington's Uniform

By the end of the American Revolution, George Washington was the country's most famous figure. The Smithsonian's bicentennial exhibition featured a number of his personal effects, which lend a human touch to this often idealized man. Family legend maintains that Washington wore the uniform shown at right when he resigned his commission as Commander-in-Chief in December, 1783.
