Photograph of the west side of the Smithsonian Institution Building looking east towards the United States Capitol. The dome of the Capitol was under construction, dating the photograph to 1862. A fence and small path encircled the Castle. The West Wing floor was rebuilt with fireproof materials and reconfigured in 1871.

Exterior view of the south side of the West Wing and Range of the Smithsonian Institution Building dated 1900. The West Range connected the West Wing to the Main Building which was visible to the east. Skylights in the West Wing were replaced in 1893. The West Wing roof was rebuilt with fireproof materials in 1891.

Color photograph of the West Wing and Range of the Castle from the south dated 1975. The Octagon Tower and Northwest Tower were visible. A parking lot existed in the South Yard. In 1971 the West Wing was renovated into the Commons dining facility.
