Aerial view of Washington with the Smithsonian Institution Building visible. The Castle and the National Museum Building (now the Arts and Industries Building) were the only constructed Smithsonian buildings on the undeveloped Mall. The future site of the Museum of Natural History remained not cleared, dating the photograph to circa 1904. A shed constructed in 1898 was visible in the South Yard.

Aerial view of the Smithsonian Institution Building and the Freer Gallery of Art dated 1963. The Astrophysical Observatory building and parking lot occupied the South Yard. In 1963, the Smithsonian Institution requested that the General Services Administration prepare a feasibility study for the renovation of the Smithsonian Institution Building.

The south side of the Mall was occupied by the Smithsonian Institution Building, Arts and Industries Building, Hishhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and National Air and Space Museum. A parade was present on Jefferson Drive which passed by the Smithsonian Institution Building. A Red Cross tent was on the Mall. The South Yard was under construction for the Quadrangle.
